The Kosmopolit, introduced in 1888, was one of two typewriters manufactured by the German firm Guhl & Harbeck in Hamburg. Their first typewriter, introduced in 1882, was called the Hammonia - a rather primitive single-element index machine.
Like its predecessor, the Kosmopolit is a rather sturdy construction in steel and cast iron - not unlike the company's most known product, the sewing machine. Selecting character and printing is done in one operation. The type is in the form of a semi-circular rubber band which was easily interchangeable and could be obtained in a variety of fonts, including two with the Cyrillic alphabet.

1882 lanserade den tyska firman Guhl & Harbeck i Hamburg sin första skrivmaskin under namnet Hammonia (bilden ovan) - en ganska primitiv konstruktion med typstång som för tanken till den första svenska skrivmaskinen, Husqvarnas legendariska Sampo. Sampo hade dock ett typhjul i stället för typstång.
1888 var det dags för en uppföljare till Hammonia som fick namnet Kosmopolit (bilden överst på sidan) - en ganska tung och solid konstruktion som för tanken till firmans huvudprodukt, symaskiner. Man väljer tecken och slår an bokstaven med samma handgrepp. Det lätt utbytbara typsegmentet (som kunde fås med både latinskt och kyrilliskt alfabet) har formen av en halvmånformad gummiplatta, och infärgning sker med dyna.
