In 1874, the Remington arms factory at Ilion, New York, started production of the Sholes typewriter. The Sholes machine - which never was called "Remington N:o 1" during its lifetime - did only type capital letters. In 1878, the first typewriter with a shift key was introduced - the Remington Model 2.
The machine illustrated, however, is a Remington Model 7, introduced in 1897. It is identical to the American Model 6, save for the extra keys needed for the Scandinavian and German letters Å, Ä, Ö and Ü. Production was discontinued in 1914.
Like its predecessors, it has an "understrike mechanism" which means that the first few lines of writing were hidden from sight. For immediate reference, it was equipped with a hinged carriage and lifting lever (see illustration below). It was not until the advent of the Model 10 in 1908 that Remington could offer a "visible writer."
1874 började Remingtons vapenfabrik i staten New York tillverka Christopher Sholes' skrivmaskin. Sholesmaskinen - som i efterhand har kommit att kallas "Remington nr 1" - skrev emellertid bara stora bokstäver. 1878 var det dags för modell 2 - den första skrivmaskinen med skifttangent. Påföljande modeller kallades följdriktigt nr 3, 4 och 5.
Bilden ovan föreställer Remington modell 7, som tillverkades mellan 1897 och 1914. Nästan identisk var modell 6, som dock saknade tangenter för Å, Ä och Ö, samt modell 9 med extrabred vals. Modell 8 tycks ha varit en maskin med utvidgat europeiskt alfabet eller specialtecken.
Precis som hos föregångarna slår typarmarna på undersidan av valsen - man kan alltså inte genast läsa det man har skrivit. Först med synlig skrift var modell 10 från 1908, följd av modell 11 med inbyggd tabulator.
