The American Simplex was offered in a wide range of models between 1894 and 1934. Although the original intention might have been to offer a cheap "people's typewriter", it drifted more and more towards the toy angle as the years went by. Judging by its garish lithographed tinplate design, the machine illustrated was probably made during the early 1920s.
Toy typewriters invariably have some sort of type-wheel, which has to be moved by hand. The Simplex' is made of rubber with a built-in ink-pad. The many varieties of Simplex frequently turn up at collectors' swap meets and flea markets - at least they do in the United States!
