The Danish Contex is a simple adding machine with 'half keyboard', i.e. with only the digits from one to five. Larger numbers had to be entered by consecutive addition, e.g. 345 + 111 for 456. A skilled user, however, could easily perform multiplication - and even division - by repeated addition (see examples on the Comptometer page).
Manufactured by the Carlsen Brothers in Denmark, the Contex was sold by Zeuthen & Aagaard, which company is best known for its duplicators and office dictating machines, which were marketed under the 'Rex-Rotary' brand name. The machine illustrated above is a Contex A from the 1950s, made entirely of bakelite.
Similar to the Contex were the Czech Nisa, the Danish Dacometer, the English Plus, the German Torpedo, and the Japanese Speedee. There also were special models for the British currency system.
Around 1960, a sturdy new model of the five-key Contex arrived, known to-day as the Contex B.
Danska Contex är något så ovanligt som en additionsmaskin med "halvt" tangentbord - dvs. endast med siffrorna 1 - 5. Större tal måste slås in två gånger, exempelvis 345 + 111 för 456. En skicklig användare kunde dock utföra såväl multiplikation som division (!) genom upprepad addition - se exempel på sidan för Comptometer.
Contex tillverkades av Brødrene Carlsen i Gentofte och såldes genom firma Zeuthen & Aagaard, kanske mest känd för sina stencilapparater och kontorsdiktafoner (Rex-Rotary). Den läckert vinröda bakelitkåpan till 1950-talets Contex A (bilden överst på sidan) döljer en enkel men pålitlig mekanism, även den i bakelit.
Det fanns också särskilda modeller som kunde hantera det dåvarande brittiska myntsystemet (1 pund à 20 shillings à 12 pence). Liknande maskiner var danska Dacometer, engelska Plus, tjeckiska Nisa, tyska Torpedo och japanska Speedee.
På 1960-talet kom en ny designvariant, kallad Contex B (bilden ovan) som var en betydligt robustare konstruktion med kåpa i metall.
